Extensive construction work is currently taking place in Laugarvatn as part of the expansion of the Fontana Spa.
A 1,139 square metre building is being constructed, which will include new changing rooms and a steam bath. In addition, a 600 square metre geothermal lagoon with a bar is being developed. These new facilities are partially built on reclaimed land extending into Lake Laugarvatn, located just east of the existing spa complex.
“You could say this project is a response to Fontana’s popularity. Many visitors stop here while travelling the Golden Circle route — to Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss. On a good day, we receive 400–500 guests, and the current facilities, which have long been over capacity, need to be expanded,” says Sigurður Rafn Hilmarsson, Managing Director of Fontana, in an interview with Morgunblaðið.
