A new swimming pool opened Friday at Stapaskóli in Njarðvík. Part of a larger sports complex, it features a 25-meter pool, hot and cold tubs, and scenic views — and is open to both students and local residents.
Located right next to the Ice Mar sports hall, the pool is part of a larger complex that also includes a primary school, sports hall, library, and the pool itself. Its opening marks a significant milestone in the development of recreational infrastructure in Reykjanesbær.
Designed for the climate and the view
The new facility features a 25-meter indoor pool, hot and cold tubs, a steam room, and an infrared sauna. It also includes a gymnasium, and the entire complex offers sweeping views, both of the town and the ocean.
“We wanted the interiors to be bright and inviting. The hot tub area faces south to catch the sun, and from the pool itself, there’s a view to the north,” says Guðlaugur H. Sigurjónsson, head of the Environment and Development Department in Reykjanesbær.

One unique aspect of the building is that all technical systems are located on the ground floor, while the pool itself is on the upper level. “We raised it a bit,” Guðlaugur explains.
He adds that, although the Suðurnes region is often windy, it was still possible to design a building that takes full advantage of available light and favourable weather.

There are beautiful days, and when they come, you have to make the most of them. And who knows — if there’s another eruption nearby, we might be able to watch it straight from the pool.
