People in Laugarnes tired of constant explosions

Explosions due to construction are hitting residents of the Laugarnes neighbourhood of Reykjavík every hour. Residents are fed up with the situation, saying everything is shaking, things are falling off shelves, and cracks are forming in the walls.

Explosions due to construction have made life miserable for residents of the Laugarnes neighborhood in Reykjavík recently. So miserable, in fact, that some have considered moving. The building manager says that the site will be blasted until after next year.

At the street Sigtún in Laugarnes neighborhood, an apartment building is being built and the Grand Hotel is being expanded. Blasting is being done to build a parking garage under both buildings.

Explosion every hour between 9-16

Every hour throughout the day, residents have to expect the bombing. From nine in the morning until four in the afternoon, always on the hour.

“There’s a warning whistle, there are three of them and then a little while passes – and during that little while you’re a little nervous, you don’t really know what’s happening and then the whole house just shakes,” says Rósa Birgitta Ísfeld, who lives in Sigtún – directly opposite the construction site.
