“This is not a good forecast and probably the worst weather of the year. Especially considering that this is affecting the whole country,” says Katrin Agla Tomasdottir, a meteorologist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, but bad weather, strong winds, and precipitation are forecast today.
“We are prepared and have been coordinating actions. We have a meeting with the Icelandic Meteorological Office today to monitor the progress of the weather. Our main work, however, is to coordinate the police departments. But it will be a lot of work in the next 24 hours if the forecast holds,” says Hjördís Guðmundsdóttir, information officer for civil protection, while the Icelandic Meteorological Office has issued an orange warning for the whole country.
Flights canceled
Icelandair has canceled 38 flights to and from the country today and tomorrow, and Play has also canceled all but three of its scheduled flights from Keflavík. All of Sorpa’s recycling centers will also be closed today.
Rescue teams are preparing
“Rescue teams have been preparing and checking equipment. Especially in Eyjafjorður where the weather is expected to be the worst. Here in the southwest part of the country, we cannot be complacent, even though the winter has been relatively storm-free so far. We have the morning to fix everything small, but then the weather hits. It is also worth encouraging contractors to do their best to leave construction sites. During the last major storm, our main projects were around them,” says Jon Thor Viglundsson, information officer for Landsbjörg rescue team.
