The ER will be expanded

The Reykjavík City Planning Officer has positively responded to Landspítali’s request to install a mobile unit at the emergency department in Fossvogur.

According to the hospital’s report to the planning officer, the current premises of Landspítali’s emergency department in Fossvogur are too small for the services provided there. The proposal calls for premises for an assessment department with 20 beds on one floor, which must be around 660 square meters. It will be installed northwest of the current emergency department.

The premises are expected to meet all building technical requirements, cf. regulations, and high fire design requirements. The construction is completely reversible with minimal intervention in the existing buildings on the site.

There has been a significant increase in the strain on all hospital operations with the increasing age and population growth of the nation, says the Landspítali report. The current premises have long since collapsed and no longer meet modern hospital housing requirements.

“There is minimal space for patients and staff, and it can be stated that the situation with the increasing number of arrivals has become unbearable, as patients have to lie in the hospital corridors and in spaces that were not intended for clinical activities,” the report says.
