The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration, Vegagerðin, expresses optimism that the widening of Reykjanesbraut will be completed earlier than planned, around the middle of next year. The section near Straumsvík could well be ready before spring.
It appears that construction on the doubling [conversion to dual carriageway] of Reykjanesbraut between Krýsuvík and Hvassahraun will be completed ahead of schedule.
The road section running from Hafnarfjörður to the aluminium smelter in Straumsvík could be ready before spring, provided everything goes according to plan. This section of the road has already been partially paved, with guardrails and light poles installed.
Completion of the Reykjanesbraut expansion was originally scheduled for the end of June 2026, but Vegagerðin states that the project is progressing well despite the heavy traffic surrounding it.
Anna Elín Jóhannsdóttir, project manager at Vegagerðin, says that this, along with speeding and Icelandic winter weather, has been the biggest challenge in ensuring the safety of both road users and workers on site.
Work is underway to widen and extend the underpass at Straumsvík, where a pedestrian and cycling path will pass beneath Reykjanesbraut. This underpass is expected to be completed later this year.
In addition, construction is ongoing on an underpass at Straumur, where a water pipeline has been connected, a high-voltage cable laid, and multi-pipes installed for telecommunications companies.
Reykjanesbraut (route 41) is the main road that runs along the north side of the Reykjanes Peninsula. Amongst other functions, it connects the capital area with Iceland’s international airport at Keflavík.
