Vaðölduver power plant instead of Búrfellslundur

Landsvirkjun has decided to change the name of the first Icelandic wind farm being built in Rangárþing ytra.

In an announcement from Landsvirkjun, it is stated that it has been decided that the wind farm, which has so far been known under the working name Búrfellslundur, will now be called Vaðölduver.

“After the location of the wind farm was changed and its size reduced, we do not believe it is right to name it Búrfell, as it is a mountain considerably further south,” the announcement states.

It also states that Vaðölduver will be built south of the Sultartangi dam in the Þjórsá and Tungnaá rivers, in the area of the Vaðalda mountain. There had been talk for some time of naming the wind farm Vaðölduver, but since it was known throughout the licensing process that Búrfellslundur, it was decided not to bother with the name earlier.

In the coming years, 28 wind turbines from the German manufacturer Enercon will be built at Vaðölduver. The first 14 wind turbines will be built in the spring and summer of 2026 and commissioned in the fall. It is expected that Vaðölduver power plant will be fully completed and operational by the end of 2027.
