Just over half of respondents in a Maskína survey say they support keeping Reykjavík Airport in Vatnsmýri for the long term. Older people and residents outside the capital area are much more supportive than younger people and capital-area residents.
A little over one-fifth say they are outright opposed to the airport’s long-term location in Vatnsmýri, while a quarter are moderately supportive. These figures have changed little since Maskína last asked the question in September of last year. The share who say they are supportive has, however, risen by four percentage points year on year.
Since 2013, the share in favor has fallen by twenty percentage points. Opposition has not increased in step with that decline—only about five percentage points over the twelve years.
Views differ markedly by place of residence: 59 percent of rural respondents in the survey support the location, compared with 46 percent of Reykjavík residents and 48 percent in neighboring municipalities of the capital area.
Support increases with age: just over a quarter of those aged 18–29 said they were in favor, compared with 69 percent of respondents aged 60 and over.
