The youth association Vísir in Suðursveit recently undertook the large project of building a fully equipped athletics field. Residents in the district all lent a hand so that the project could become a reality.
The true spirit of the youth association lives on in Suðursveit in South East Iceland, despite there being no shortage of all kinds of distractions and alternative entertainment for younger people today.
That became very clear when the small but strong youth association, Vísir, took on the great task of creating a fully equipped athletics field.
People from all over Suðursveit have taken part in the project in one way or another.
If anyone thought volunteer work was a thing of the past, it seems they should drop by Suðursveit.
Bjarni Malmquist, chair of the youth association Vísir in Suðursveit, explained that the project simply sprang from people’s desire to make it happen.
I think one could certainly have tried to finance the project in such a way that all the work was paid for, but my thinking was that if I couldn’t get the volunteers, then there would be no foundation for the field. Then there is no reason to make a field, if the people don’t have the interest in it.
