Iceland: construction bids 30% over estimate

Bids come in for undulating public transport bridge.

The Icelandic public transport body Betrisamgongur has received two bids for the construction of a bridge over the sea channel separating the capital city Reykjavik and the peninsular of Kopavogur.

The bids for the Fossvogur Bridge came from two JVs, Istak-Aarsleff and Depenbrock Fossvogur, and both were more than 30% higher than the estimated cost of US$49 million.

Fossvogur Bridge is part of a rapid transit scheme and will have segregated walking and cycling paths with a bus lane in the middle. It will have viewing spaces, known as álfasteinar (fairy stones) that highlight specific landmarks.

The design, by BEAM and EFLA, was selected in an international competition (link opens in new tab) and features undulating curves to shelter users from the prevailing windWork has already started on seawalls (link opens in new tab) and the bridge will be ready in 2028.
