Nursing home fire prompts highest alert level

All available fire units were sent to the Hrafnista residential and nursing home on Sléttuvegur in Reykjavík at about 11 am this morning.

A fire broke out in an electrical panel, and the capital area fire brigade immediately went to the highest alert level.

Sverrir Björn Björnsson, shift supervisor with the capital area fire brigade, directed the operation.

This is the highest alert, F1. This is a nursing home and we place all our trust in everyone turning out. That is why everyone comes from the four stations we have. That is why you see so many pump trucks and ambulances here.

Aðsend mynd.

Fire spread up through the lift and stairwell. Sverrir Björn says the building is very well protected and has many fire compartments.

The fire has been extinguished and that went rather well. Now we are working on the final stages and sorting out what needs to be dealt with. Naturally there is a lot of water and debris that we need to suck up. Then there is the smoke ventilation.
Staff had mostly evacuated the building by the time the first firefighters arrived at the scene.

One person was missing but was found quickly.
María Fjóla Harðardóttir, chief executive of Hrafnista, says the evacuation went well.
