The damage caused by this week fire at Garðvík’s industrial building in Húsavík is estimated at close to one hundred million ISK.
This is stated by the company’s owner, Guðmundur Vilhjálmsson, when asked. He says it is clear that all equipment has been completely destroyed. Inside the building were three cars, a work machine, and a large part of the equipment that Garðvík uses. The fire broke out early in the morning.
The emergency call received at 6:16 a.m.
Henning Þór Aðalmundsson, fire chief in Norðurþing, told mbl.is that the emergency call was received at 6:16 a.m. He says there was a considerable fire in the building when firefighters arrived at the scene.
Because firefighters are still working to extinguish remaining embers, the owner has not been able to go anywhere near the building. He says the inhabited/office part of the building appears to be completely gone, but this morning the Norðurþing fire chief stated that the fire was most intense at the southern end of the building, where the break room is located.
Not giving up
Guðmundur Vilhjálmsson bought the building, which is 225 square meters, in 2019, and the company’s main operations were based there. Garðvík also has another work site in Húsavík, and part of the company’s operations is in Þórshöfn. Garðvík provides cleaning services and landscaping, and also carries out general contracting work. The company has seven employees.
“This was primarily a mechanical workshop—the building that burned—but we’re not going to let this stop us,” he says.
The most important vehicle was brought inside the night before.
“The last thing I did before I went home was that I drove in a shower-platform truck—the most important vehicle—so that it would be warm and ready for repairs the day after,” he adds.
