COWI Iceland is the only bidder under the cost estimate for Fljótagöng Tunnel

The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration (Vegagerðin) and COWI Iceland signed an agreement yesterday for the preliminary and detailed design of Fljótagöng, a tunnel that will run between Siglufjörður and Stafá in Fljót. The preliminary and detailed design work on the tunnel is expected to be completed in November 2026.

Vegagerðin and the company COWI Iceland have entered into a contract for the preliminary and detailed design of Fljótagöng.

The project includes, among other things, the preliminary and detailed design of tunnels, roads, two bridges, a roundabout, a rest area, and an underpass for pedestrians, cyclists, and equestrians.

Fljótagöng is intended to replace Strákagöng and the road through Almenningar, which has subsided significantly in recent years. The tunnel will be 5.3 kilometers long, and the project will require about 19 km of road construction outside the tunnel.

Fljótagöng is planned to run between Nautadalur in Fljót and Hólsdalur, shortening the route between Fljót and Ólafsfjörður by 14 kilometers. It will also shorten the route between Fljót and Siglufjörður by 10 kilometers.

The tender was advertised in the European Economic Area (EEA), and bids were received from three consulting firms: Efla hf., COWI Iceland, and Norconsult ehf.

Following an evaluation of qualifications and price bids, COWI Iceland was selected for the project. Vegagerðin’s estimated cost was ISK 272,000,000, and COWI’s bid was the only one below the cost estimate, at ISK 215,615,000.
