N1 and Landsbankinn have joined the group of shareholders in Eyjagöng ehf, an Icelandic project company set up to explore and potentially develop a subsea road tunnel between the mainland of Iceland and Heimaey in the Westman Islands.
A statement says the project has taken a major step forward with their arrival.
Íslandsbanki was already a shareholder in the company, and the statement says the involvement of the two banks is particularly positive, as they were key parties in the financing of the Hvalfjörður tunnel.
It also says that the involvement of N1 marks a milestone, as the company sees major opportunities in development in South Iceland.
It is planned to begin exploratory drilling next month to examine the possibility of a permanent road connection between Vestmannaeyjar and the mainland.
