Construction mistaken for quakes

Unusual micro-seismic activity was recorded in Svartsengi last week – but it has since been revealed that the tremors were not natural earthquakes, but explosions caused by construction work near the Blue Lagoon.

This is stated on the website of the Icelandic Met Office.

The Met Office says it is normally informed about explosions from construction in this area, as it can be difficult to distinguish them from earthquakes.

Vísir quotes Birna Lárusdóttir, communications officer for HS Orka, as saying that the contractor carrying out the work for HS Orka had failed to notify authorities about the explosions.
