Equipment transported by transportation barges to an island in the river

Construction work on the construction of a new bridge over the Ölfusár River and the relocation of the Iceland ring road (1) outside the urban area of Selfoss began late last year.

Work has been carried out on soil investigations for the bridge foundations, the creation of facilities and soil replacement in the ring road embankment east of the river, according to the Icelandic Road Administration’s website.

Next time the weather allows the equipment will be transported by barge to Efri-Laugardaelaeyja for soil research that needs to be carried out there.

It is also planned that work will soon begin on road crossings west of the river. This work will require the closure of footpaths to the forestry. Work is underway to design a bypass for pedestrians closer to the riverbank, which will be usable for the time being.

The new bridge will be a 330-meter-long and 19-meter-wide truss bridge with a 60-meter-high tower on Efri-Laugardaelaeyja. It will replace the old bridge, which was built about 80 years ago.

Around 14,500 vehicles cross the Ölfusár Bridge every day, and the Icelandic Road Administration expects traffic to increase further with the increase in residents and travelers. In addition to traffic, the new bridge will carry utility pipes, electricity, fiber optics, hot water and cold water. Traffic is expected to be heavy on cars, pedestrians and cyclists on the bridge.

Further information can be found in newpaper Morgunblaðið, published on Thursday, January 16th.
