Fitting-out begins at new Landspítali hospital

The new Landspítali [hospital] in Reykjavík is steadily coming together.

The largest and most central building is the treatment core, effectively the main hospital; a six-storey structure divided into five sections.

Currently, work is underway fitting out inpatient wards, which exclusively consist of single rooms, each with private bathroom facilities. Completion is expected by the end of 2027.

At the centre of the space is a glass atrium intended to bring natural daylight onto each floor.

Additionally, daylight penetrates between building sections all the way down to the lower basement level, as considerable emphasis is placed on making the building bright.

The hospital is a massive undertaking, covering well over 200,000 square metres.

Approximately four hundred workers are presently employed at the site, and when interior construction reaches full scale on the main floors, this number will increase to over a thousand workers.

Design work has caused some delays during the project to date, according to the department director.
