Bæjarráð Garðabæjar (council of Garðabær) granted Almar Guðmundsson, bæjarstjóri (municipal manager), authority this week to negotiate with the state on a property exchange that is a prerequisite for a long-awaited treatment centre to be built in the town.
A letter of intent on a facility for children aged 15 – 17 was signed in 2018 and at that time the aim was for construction to begin in 2020.
Nothing came of that, but now construction appears to be drawing closer.
Bæjarráð Garðabæjar approved this morning that the bæjarstjóri negotiate with fjármála- og efnahagsráðuneytið (Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs) on the state relinquishing Sunnuhvoll, which stands at Spítalavegur 2, and receiving in return the plot Friðarvellir with building permissions as consideration.
The council also approved beginning preparations for road construction linked to the building plans.
