A large boulder fell from Kirkjubólshlíð onto the road between Súðavík and Ísafjörður shortly after noon today.
It landed in the middle of the road on the opposite side of Skutulsfjörður from Ísafjörður, just outside the airport.
Rockfalls from Kirkjubólshlíð and Súðavíkurhlíð are a well-known problem, but this is among the larger stones to fall onto the road.

In a conversation with RÚV a passer-by pointed out that it was lucky no one had been hit by the boulder, and also that it had fallen in bright daylight, rather than in darkness or poor visibility.
The road is now clear, after workers used machinery to push the boulder into the water.
