Keflavík Airport Plans 22bn ISK Terminal Expansion

A 22.3 billion ISK expansion at Keflavík International Airport is set to begin this year, as airport operator Isavia ohf. moves forward with plans to construct a new central connecting building within the Leifsstöð terminal.

As reported by Vísir, the project will link the airport’s north and south buildings and is scheduled to begin its first phase in 2026, with completion targeted for 2031.

Major infrastructure project

According to Isavia, the structure will measure nearly 27,000 square metres in total, creating what officials describe as a new central hub within the terminal.

“The total cost of this project is around 22.3 billion in this first phase of connection construction,” said Maren Lind Másdóttir, Director of Airport Development and Infrastructure at Isavia.

The expansion follows the opening of the eastern wing in February last year, which increased terminal space by 30 percent at a cost of 30 billion ISK. A separate extension to the south building, known as Parking Ten, costing 3.6 billion ISK, is due to open next month.

During construction, a temporary corridor will be built to maintain passenger access.

“We need to build a temporary walkway to allow people to get past the work area,” Maren said.

Further development phases will depend on market conditions.
