Installation of new aircraft arresting systems is underway at the end of one of the two runways at Keflavík Airport. The equipment is intended to stop aircraft that are about to overrun the runway.
In a written response from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs to a query from Morgunblaðið, it is stated that the project involves renewing the existing arresting systems and bringing into service new equipment better suited to an airfield used for both civil and defence purposes, and that spare parts for the current equipment are difficult to obtain.
The response notes that since the era of the Defence Force there have been—and remain—in operation four arresting systems at the airfield, one at each runway end. As a rule, airports that accommodate fighter jets are required to have arresting systems.
