New earthquake swarm could intensify

Over 700 earthquakes have been recorded in the swarm that began near Reykjanestá on Wednesday. Six of these were above magnitude 3. (Land) deformation measurements do not however indicate that the swarm is caused by magma movement.

The earthquake swarm that started south of Reykjanestá on Wednesday appears to be dying down, according to a natural hazards specialist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office.

However, it is not ruled out that earthquake activity could increase again.

The earthquakes may be triggered by changes in the stress field on the Reykjanes Peninsula, following years of seismic and volcanic activity in the region.

Land deformation measurements taken this week have not shown clear indications that the swarm is linked to magma movement.

So far, over 700 earthquakes have been recorded in this sequence, most of them around magnitude 1. Six of the quakes exceeded magnitude 3, with the strongest occurring late on Wednesday night at magnitude 3.5.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office has received reports of earthquakes being felt in populated areas, including Grindavík.
