A new road alignment to the future Ölfusá Bridge—and its connection to the Ring Road (Suðurlandsvegur) north of Selfoss—is now clearly visible from the air.
Preparatory works for the new bridge are already underway, and a temporary bridge has been extended out to the island from the east bank. On the island, a 60-metre tower will rise for the new cable-stayed bridge, which could become a striking local landmark.
The new bridge is scheduled to open in 2028. Traffic volumes in South Iceland have increased sharply in recent years; the new bridge will significantly boost the Ring Road’s capacity.
