Repairs to the road at Jökulsá in Lón, which was badly damaged in heavy rain over the weekend, have been completed for now – barely 48 hours later. Traffic has been reopened on the ring road (Route 1) between Höfn and Djúpivogur.
Gunnlaugur Rúnar Sigurðsson, foreman at the Icelandic Road Administration (Vegagerðin) in Höfn, says the road is now passable for all cars.
This is just a decently good gravel road over about 150 metres. We still need to do a little finishing on the verges and I think we need to replace two culverts… I think there are a few thousand cars travelling between Höfn and Djúpivogur every day at the moment.
Gunnlaugur Rúnar says that the project is not yet fully completed.
Tomorrow we plan to bring in more material for off-road works. For example, there is a large puddle there that we intend to fill in.
In addition, two protective embankments above the road need to be reinforced with rock to channel water under the bridge. One of them broke apart over about 100 metres.
But we will also need to monitor the situation tomorrow as considerable rainfall is expected.
Route 1 closed for five hours south of Fáskrúðsfjörður
The ring road will be closed on Sunday night for five hours from 7pm until midnight, in a different stretch – to the south of Fáskrúðsfjörður. However, diversions are possible using Öxi (Route 939) and Breiðdalsheiði (Route 95).
