Construction work by the University of Iceland (Háskóli Íslands) and the Student Welfare Organization (Félagsstofnun stúdenta) at the former Hotel Saga is in its final stages. The project was organized to start on the upper floors and work down, with classrooms located on the lower floors.
Kristinn Jóhannesson, Director of Construction and Technical Services at the University, says the goal is to complete the classrooms on the lower floor next month, following inspection by the Health Inspectorate.
Clear rationale for the purchase
The University and the Student Welfare Organization purchased Hotel Saga from the Farmers’ Association for ISK 3.6 billion at the beginning of 2022 for their operations. The estimated cost of alterations to the premises is just over ISK 9 billion, bringing the potential total cost to about ISK 12.7 billion.
