Náttúruhamfaratrygging Íslands (Iceland Catastrophe Insurance) has recently been working on a more detailed examination of 47 plots in Grindavík that lie on – or close to – fissures. Geological investigations were deemed necessary, with excavators digging down to the fissures to assess the impact on the buildings standing there.
Jón Örvar Bjarnason, head of the insurance division at Náttúruhamfaratrygging Íslands, details what is known so far.
There are somewhere around 10 and 12 properties where repairs would be so complex or expensive that it would not be cost-effective to carry them out. That is roughly the number of total-loss houses that emerged from these investigations.
With these houses included, the number of total-loss houses has now risen to just over 70.
The total compensation payments have now reached just over ISK 10.000.000.000. The vast majority of these total-loss cases, and indeed the vast majority of damage cases, have been settled… But there are a few cases that are still being processed by us, so we expect that the total compensation payment for the event as it has unfolded may end up at around or above ISK 12.000.000.000.
I think it is safe to say that, all things considered, we are well on the way with this. There will be a handful of cases that will continue to be processed for some time, but fortunately we can see the end of this, at least as far as what has happened in Grindavík so far.
