Extensive maintenance work has been underway at Vesturbæjarlaug (pool). It is now clear that more concrete repairs are needed than originally anticipated, which calls for a postponement of the reopening – the new projected date is 15 July.
Vesturbæjarlaug, a popular pool in the west side of Reykjavík, has been closed for maintenance, and it now seems the closure will extend for longer than first thought.
The pool basin itself, which was built in 1961, proved to be in worse condition than initial inspections suggested.
It therefore became necessary to carry out more extensive concrete repairs than originally planned, and this has led to the reopening being delayed – the new anticipated date is 15 July.
The basin has been painted every 3–4 years for more than half a century and had accumulated many layers of paint. A structure was erected over the pool to enable repair work and the removal of old paint layers. It was necessary to remove these entirely to ensure high-quality and long-lasting concrete repairs on the basin.
While the pool cannot be opened due to work on the basin, the time is being used as effectively as possible, with other parts of the building being upgraded – such as the reception area and saunas – and a new emergency system is also being installed.

The aim is to complete as many of these works as possible in this round to avoid further disruptions for maintenance in the future.
Anna Kristín Sigurðardóttir, director of Vesturbæjarlaug, says every effort is being made to complete the repairs on time.
We sincerely thank everyone for their understanding and patience. We look forward to welcoming guests on 15 July to a renewed and revitalised Vesturbæjarlaug – our shared treasure.
