The decision to push Fjarðarheiði Tunnel further down the government’s priority list has little impact on the operation of the ferry Norræna, which will continue to sail to Seyðisfjörður.
Óskar Sveinn Friðriksson, CEO of the freight company Smyril Line Cargo, says it is no secret that the ferry does not operate year-round to Seyðisfjörður, mainly due to difficult road conditions out of the town.
“Fjarðarheiði has been closed an average of 27.7 days per year over the past ten years, and it is difficult to maintain ferry operations in mid-winter when passengers risk being unable to leave Seyðisfjörður. The last passenger call of the ferry this year was on 20 November, and the first call in the new year will be on 18 March,” Friðriksson says.
