On Wednesday, 17 September, a major milestone was reached in the development of the Vaðalda wind farm when Ístak poured the first foundation for the 28 wind turbines to be installed on the site.
It was decided to start by pouring the foundation for turbine No. 13. Despite the number, the pour went very smoothly and took about 14 hours to complete, according to Landsvirkjun’s website.
The foundation used about 70 tonnes of steel and just over 400 cubic metres of concrete.
This implies a total of roughly 1,960 tonnes of steel for all the foundations. Strong bases are needed: the maximum height of each turbine, to blade tip, is 150 metres.
