Landsbankinn’s building at Reykastræti in Reykjavík has received the Concrete Award 2025 from the Icelandic Concrete Association. The Association annually recognises built structures that combine original and professional use of concrete in the man-made environment.
The Award recognises the building itself as well as the entire team involved in its design and construction. A competition was held for the design of the building and the proposal of the Nordic Office of Architecture (then Arkthing) and C.F. Møller was chosen as the winner. Great emphasis was placed on selecting strong partners throughout the entire construction and building process. Efla Consulting Engineers were responsible for the engineering design, ThG Verk handled the concrete structure of the building, and Íslenskir aðalverktakar (IAV) oversaw the final completion. The project was managed by VSB on behalf of the client. Construction took place from 2018 to 2023 and the building was taken into use in 2022 and 2023.
Concrete plays a key role in both the structural framework and the appearance of Landsbankinn’s building, contributing to its strength, stability and visual coherence. The design of the building is inspired by Icelandic nature, with its crevices and chasms, horizontal strata and columnar basalt. Externally, the building is clad with basalt from the Hrepphólar quarry in Hrunamannahreppur, while internally, the tiered exposed concrete reflects Iceland’s rugged rock formations. A combination of in-situ patterned concrete, precast stair treads and planters mimics the geological layers found in Icelandic nature. Through a carefully considered selection of materials and finishes, harmony has been achieved between architecture and landscape.

Hermann Hermannsson, Head of Property Management at Landsbankinn, accepted the award alongside representatives of the building’s designers and contractors.
