Transport for the Capital Area (TfCA). has signed a contract with VSO Consulting for the design of the Borgarlína (BRT City Line) , which covers Suðurlandsbraut and Laugavegur up to and including the Hlemmur area. This is an extensive design project that will include both preliminary design and detailed design for the Borgarlína route on this section.
The contract will begin detailed design, which is the final stage of design for construction, on a street section that corresponds to approximately a quarter of the total length of this first phase of the Borgarlína.
The design project includes:
•Design of streets, intersections and paths for all modes of transport, including the Borgarlína, cycling and pedestrian traffic.
•Planning of traffic control and traffic light control for all modes of transport.
•Design of Borgarlína stations and adjacent areas to ensure easy access and good planning.
•Lighting design, blue-green surface water solutions and environmental design.
•Coordination of projects in collaboration with municipalities, utility companies and other parties with interests in the area.

The project in numbers:
•The estimated number of working hours for the design is 9,400 hours, but the contract is worth around 240 million paths.
•The total length of the design project is around 3.7 km.
•The number of existing intersections within the area is 17, of which 8 are light-controlled.
•The design area is divided into 4 sections, four sections will be designed in detailed design and one of which will also be in preliminary design.
Collaboration and next steps
The design will be prepared in close consultation with the Icelandic Road Administration, the City of Reykjavík and other stakeholders, with an emphasis on creating a safe environment with increased quality of life, an efficient and sustainable public transport system.
It is planned that construction will then go out to tender in phases in 2025-2026 and that it will begin gradually as the required permits are available.

The Borgarlína (BRT City Line) is divided into 6 phases. The first phase extends from Hamraborg in Kópavogur to Krossmýrartorg in Reykjavík and is 14.5 km long. It is expected to be completed in 2031, but the first construction work began in Kársnes in Kópavogur in January 2025 with the construction of landfills for the Fossvogur Bridge.
Investments of the Transport Agreement:
The estimated cost of all six phases of the Borgarlína (BRT City Line) is 130.4 billion isk.kr., or almost 42% of the investments of the Transport Agreement. The total investments of the Agreement in the capital area are estimated at 311 billion isk.kr., but the largest item is the main road construction, which amounts to 130.7 billion isk.kr. Then, about 40 billion isk.kr. will be spent on building bicycle paths and pedestrian paths throughout the capital area.
