The construction of the Fossvogur Bridge, the first major project in connection with the City Line (Borgarlína), officially began yesterday.
The new Minister of Transport, Eyjolfur Armannsson, took the first step on the project, together with Bergþora Þorkelsdóttir, CEO of the Icelandic Road Administration, Davið Thorlaksson, CEO of Transport for the Capital Area (TfCA), Einar Thorsteinsson, Mayor of Reykjavík, and Asdís Kristjansdóttir, Mayor of Kópavogur, yesterday in the presence of a large number of people.
The projects in question involve work on land fill and sea protection for the planned construction of the Fossvogur Bridge. The contract between the Icelandic Road Administration and the construction company Grafa og grjot ehf. was signed last week following a tender in November 2024.
Bergþora said that this was a big day and that there had been a long lead-up to this project. “The first ideas for a bridge over Fossvogur Bridge were presented in 2013 and a lot has happened since then. This is the first project in the City Line (Borgarlína) and marks a journey that we have been preparing for a long time,” said Bergþora.
Davið did thank the Icelandic Road Administration, the City of Reykjavík and Kopavogur for the collaboration, which was just beginning.
Eyjolfur was pleased to see the construction begin. “It is the dream of every Minister of Transport to be on site to start construction with a shovel in hand and we just hope that the construction will go quickly,” he said.
Einar said that the first construction project for the City Line project was a bridge. “It is a definite symbol of this bridge that has been built between the municipalities in the capital area on a common transport policy, an emphasis on everything that comes with the Transport Charter, and it is an extremely important bridge, and last but not least between the municipalities in the capital area and the state.”
Asdis said this was a major milestone. “The Fossvogur Bridge has been under discussion, but this is a matter of enormous interest, not just for the residents of Kopavogur but for all residents of the capital. Here we expect 10,000 people to cycle, walk or take the City Line (Borgarlína)bus over the bridge every day. It’s great that we’ve reached this point,” she said.
The estimated completion date for this part of the project is November 1, 2026, but the Fossvogur Bridge is expected to be ready by mid-2028.
