A new national stadium is set to rise in Laugardalur. The stadium has long been awaited as the current one, Laugardalshöll, does not meet the requirements for international competitions.
The Icelandic construction company Íslenskir aðalverktakar and its partner companies will design and construct the new National Stadium, which is set to rise in Laugardalur. Their proposed bid was 16,8 billion ISK. They outbid the construction company Ístak.
The National Stadium or Þjóðarhöllin has long been awaited as the current stadium, Laugardalshöll, does not meet the requirements for international competitions. As a result, national games have had to be held elsewhere.

The new stadium is to be built just south of Laugardalshöll and will have connections to the existing sports structures in the area, Laugardalshöll and the Athletics Center. It will also be connected to the proposed city transit network, Borgarlínan.
A statutory waiting period will now begin during which the other companies that submitted proposals to take on the project can review the decision and appeal if they wish.
