200,000 m² of asphalt for the new Ölfusá Bridge
An estimated 200,000 square metres of asphalt will be laid as part of the paving work for the new Ölfusá Bridge — equivalent to approximately 30,500 tonnes of asphalt. A significant portion of this will be used on the Ring Road along Suðurlandsvegur.
A 60,000 square metre stretch will be paved in three layers, requiring around 27,000 tonnes of asphalt. In addition, approximately 20,000 square metres of local roads, pedestrian paths, and related infrastructure will be constructed, consuming an estimated 4,000 tonnes of asphalt.
330-metre Ölfusá Bridge
The “Ring Road through Ölfus” project includes the construction of a 330-metre-long bridge, a new 3.7 km section of the Ring Road, and about one kilometre of other two-lane roads. The project also entails building new road junctions east of Selfoss, underpasses beneath the Ring Road for pedestrians, cyclists, and horseback riders, as well as vehicle and pedestrian underpasses. The aim of the project is to increase the capacity of the Ring Road, separate traffic directions, and improve road safety.
“Ring Road through Ölfus”
A contract has been signed between Óskatak and Colas Iceland, under which Colas will carry out the paving works for the new Ölfusá Bridge. Óskatak, a subcontractor to ÞG Verk (the main contractor), is responsible for earthworks, including road construction in the project. The new Ölfusá Bridge is part of the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration’s initiative titled “Ring Road through Ölfus”, which involves rerouting the Ring Road to bypass the urban area of Selfoss. Óskatak will handle the road construction, while Colas will lay the asphalt.
“We are very pleased to continue our strong cooperation with Óskatak, which has developed over the past few years. We also welcome the opportunity to contribute to one of the most exciting infrastructure projects in recent years, under the capable leadership of ÞG Verk, the project’s main contractor,” said Sigþór Sigurðsson, Managing Director of Colas
