The Municipality of Ölfus and Íslenskar fasteignir ehf. have signed an agreement allocating a site for the construction of a new nursing home in Þorlákshöfn. The home will be located at the intersection of Egilsbraut and Mánabraut, in the immediate vicinity of Lífsgæðasetur aldraðra (a senior well-being center), and forms an integral part of a larger development that also includes new residential housing along Óseyrarbraut.
The aim of the nursing home project is to strengthen services for older residents and enhance their quality of life in the years ahead. Through this partnership, an important step is taken to meet the growing need for nursing-care capacity in Ölfus and across South Iceland.
Preliminary design and planning work is scheduled to be completed in late autumn 2025, after which the next stages of development can proceed.
“Ölfus is experiencing strong growth, both in population and employment opportunities. Building out infrastructure is a key factor in ensuring success. The nursing home is one of our priority projects to secure high-quality services for Ölfus’s older residents,” says Mayor Elliði Vignisson.
“We are already working on major projects in Ölfus, and we are genuinely pleased to contribute to strengthening services for older citizens. At Íslenskar fasteignir we have specialist expertise that will be put to good use in the design and delivery of this important project, in close cooperation with the municipality,” says Gunnar Thoroddsen, Chair of Íslenskar fasteignir.
Under the agreement, the site will be allocated without plot fees or development rights fees; however, street-infrastructure and planning fees will be paid in accordance with the municipality’s tariff. With this, Ölfus demonstrates clear social responsibility and puts the welfare of its older residents first.
The development will not only strengthen Þorlákshöfn as a thriving community but also improve elder-care services across South Iceland.
