All the buildings of Bifröst University are being advertised for sale as a single property. The asking price is ISK 3.2 billion.
All the university buildings, along with its teacher and student residences, are included in the sale. The total floor area is just under 4,900 square metres, and the land covers 17.8 hectares. The entire property is being sold as one unit.
Local newspaper Skessuhorn drew attention to a full-page advertisement from the real estate agency Gimli in today’s Morgunblaðið, announcing an open house – or rather, open houses – tomorrow, Saturday at 1 pm.
“This place needs a visionary”, says real estate agent Halla Unnur Helgadóttir, who is handling the sale. She says the village is unique in Iceland, and the university, which owns the property, concluded that selling it as a single entity would be the most practical option.
Several parties have already expressed interest in purchasing the village.
At its peak, around 700 people lived in Bifröst – students, staff, and their families. Shortly after the turn of the century, the university decided to focus on distance learning, and since then, the number of on-campus students has steadily declined.
Today, most teaching at Bifröst University is delivered remotely, with occasional in-person sessions held at Hvanneyri and in Borgarnes. In recent years, the buildings have been used to accommodate refugees.
Bifröst University had been in talks to merge with the University of Akureyri, but those discussions were terminated earlier this autumn.
