The headquarters of the biotech company Primex by Siglufjörður harbour were badly damaged in a fire a month ago. The managing director says no layoffs are planned – and wants to restart processing as soon as possible.
Just over a month ago fire broke out in the building of the biotech company Primex by Siglufjörður harbour and quickly became a major blaze in the upper part of the building, which firefighters struggled to bring under control.
It took half a day to extinguish the embers and there was then a great deal of clean-up work ahead.
The damage is still being assessed, but it is clear it amounts to hundreds of millions of ISK. The police have completed their investigation of the scene and it is believed the fire can be traced to a machine malfunction. Nothing indicates arson.
The company produces the raw material chitosan from shrimp shells, which it has sold to other companies, but has also used itself to produce cosmetics and health products under the name ChitoCare.
The product stock and extensions escaped the fire entirely, so activity can continue although in a modified form.

Primex, says chitosan production is currently halted. Much equipment was damaged and other equipment is still being assessed to determine whether it can be brought back into operation.
More than twenty people work at Primex, making it a fairly large workplace in Tröllaskagi. Vigfús says no layoffs are planned and they want to restart processing again as soon as possible.
Vigfús says they have not been sitting idle. The clean-up work has been extensive and staff have had plenty to do. They have also been planning the rebuilding of the house.
A building has been designed and drawn up which will then simply be placed on top of the slab I am currently standing on.
