More new construction firms than last year in Iceland

The number of companies in the construction industry increased in the first half of this year. This is evident from Statistics Iceland’s figures on new registrations and corporate bankruptcies.

Fewer companies went bankrupt in the first half of the year—135 compared with 145 in the first half of 2024. New registrations were similar to last year, totaling 283.

New registrations therefore exceeded bankruptcies by 147 in the first six months of the year, compared with 138 in the same period last year. The increase in the number of companies suggests that activity in the sector remains substantial, while the share of job vacancies in the economy is highest in construction.

About one in six new business registrations were in construction

In the first half of this year, 1,765 companies were newly registered. The largest share was in construction, with 282 registrations—about one in every six new registrations across the economy. You can read more about developments in the construction industry in HMS’s latest monthly report, published last week.
