Demolition begins on Grindavík houses

Contractors began demolishing residential houses yesterday that had been declared uninhabitable after seismic activity in Grindavík. At least 40 residential houses in the town are to be demolished.

Demolition began yesterday morning on residential houses in Grindavík that had been declared uninhabitable after seismic activity. The town council has decided that at least 40 residential houses in the town are to be demolished.

Demolition of three of them started on Mánagata and Mánagerði. One nursing home in the town and a greenhouse had previously been demolished. All of the buildings are located on fissure swarms and have been declared uninhabitable.

Jón Gunnar Margeirsson, managing director of the contracting company Jóns og Margeirs, says the work has started well despite poor weather. Maximum safety must be ensured during the operation.

We are completely in a safe area here… However, we are not allowed to leave the machines at all and everything is carried out using machinery.
Demolition part of rebuilding

Permission has been granted to demolish two additional houses on Austurvegur and one industrial building elsewhere in the town.

Jón Gunnar says the demolition is a necessary part of Grindavík’s recovery.

Even though it is sad to have to demolish these buildings, it is part of rebuilding the town… We cannot begin rebuilding unless we demolish and repair the fissures in order to make the town safe, and that is what we want.
