Museum challenges presented worth of threatened house

Borgarsögusafn (Reykjavík City Museum) says incorrect information is given about the preservation value of a house that is planned to be demolished in Vesturbær in Reykjavík, in a local plan for the area.

Borgarsögusafn (Reykjavík City Museum) sent an opinion on Monday to the environment and planning division of Reykjavíkurborg (Reykjavík city), in which it claimed that incorrect information was being given in the explanatory report with the new local plan for the plot Holtsgata 10, also known as Sæmundarhlíð.

In the opinion, Borgarsögusafn says that its conclusion on the preservation value of the house Sæmundarhlíð is incorrectly presented. In the text of the explanatory report it is stated that according to the building survey the house has “medium preservation value”. The correct information is that Borgarsögusafn assessed the house as having high preservation value in the survey in question.

The museum points out that the same misrepresentation is found in documents that were submitted to the Environment and Planning Committee at its meeting on 8 October and in the record of the city council member at the city council meeting on 16 October.

The museum also draws attention to the fact that markings on the plan proposal drawing are lacking, since neither the protection status of the houses on the plots under the Cultural Heritage Act nor the neighbourhood protection within Hringbraut, which applies to the plots under Reykjavík’s Master Plan 2040, is set out.

According to the local plan, Sæmundarhlíð is to be demolished and an eleven apartment building constructed in its place.

City councillors of Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn (Independence Party) have protested the demolition of the house and say it is part of “a built pattern that [is] one of the strong characteristics of Vesturbær”.

The museum’s opinion reads,

Borgarsögusafn recommends that the text of the explanatory report in the planning proposal be corrected in line with the above comment and that the protection status of houses and the built area within Hringbraut be set out on the plan proposal drawing.
