Ölduselsskóli to be evacuated due to condition of building

An inspection of Ölduselsskóli has revealed that extensive repairs must be carried out on the premises. The school’s autumn break has been extended, and portable classrooms will be installed to address the expected accommodation shortage.

The capital’s Ölduselsskóli school will have to be evacuated, either partially or completely, in order to undertake extensive repairs to the building. This is the conclusion following an inspection of the school premises.

Moisture was measured and samples taken from various parts of the building.

This information was shared in a message sent from Ölduselsskóli to parents. It states that some areas of the school have already been closed, including the classrooms for Year 4 and several specialist teaching rooms.

Extensive cleaning of the entire school building will begin tomorrow. Furniture and teaching materials must be removed from the closed areas. Cleaning will be carried out by specialised professionals, as will the inspection of equipment and teaching materials.
The message does not specify exactly what the problem with the building’s condition is.

Portable classrooms will be installed on the north side of the school to address the anticipated housing issue. These classrooms are expected to be ready for use next year. Temporary teaching spaces will be arranged in the meantime.

In consultation with Reykjavíkurborg’s Department of Education and Youth, the school’s management has decided to extend the autumn break until Friday, 31 October. Classes will therefore resume at the school on Monday, 3 November.

The message to parents notes that arrangements are being made for supervision of younger pupils on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday next week.

During the winter break and next week, cleaning will continue, while work will also focus on locating and stopping leaks, removing damaged building materials, and ensuring that as many rooms as possible remain usable. It cannot be ruled out that the work may take longer than expected, as there is always some uncertainty when building materials are being removed.
