Possibility of Heimaey tunnels to be investigated

The company Eyjagöng ehf. intends to raise ISK 200.000.000 in its first financing round in order to carry out geological investigations on Heimaey and at Kross in Landeyjar.

Today most people travel to Vestmannaeyjar, in the Westman Islands, by the ferry Herjólfur. Road tunnels to Heimaey, the main island, would completely transform transport in the area.

Eyjagöng ehf. aims to undertake investigations of geological strata on Heimaey and at Kross in Landeyjar with a view to possible tunnel construction. The purpose is to reduce uncertainty regarding the cost of a possible road connection between the mainland and the islands.

Individuals, companies and municipalities are involved in the establishment of the company, according to a statement from the company.

The statement recalls that a working group appointed by Samgönguráðuneytið (Ministry of Infrastructure) concluded last year that it was urgent to carry out geological investigations on Heimaey and at Kross in Landeyjar because of possible tunnel construction.

Eyjagöng ehf. plans to raise ISK 200.000.000 in the first financing round, and share subscription commitments already amount to more than half of that sum. The company is also in close cooperation with Vegagerðin (Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration) on preparing price surveys in connection with the planned drilling, which is scheduled to begin in the spring months of 2026.

Flight connection restored for winter

Separately, Norlandair have announced a schedule of flights for this winter, again connecting Reykjavík (domestic) airport with the islands. The service will operate from next Monday until the end of February, four days a week.
