The new planned hotel tower at Skúlagata 26 is starting to reach the sky, and the basement and first floors have been poured.
Kettle Collective, the architectural firm of Scottish architect Tony Kettles, is designing the hotel’s exterior, and Kettle stated in an interview with Morgunblaðið in early 2020 that a new landmark should be created in the city.
The hotel tower will be 17 stories high and have 210 rooms. An elevator and stairwell will be poured, and steel units will be arranged around it.
With a view of the city and canals
On March 14 last year, Morgunblaðið reported that the second-top floor of the hotel would house a bar with a view of the city center and the canals, and above it would be a rooftop terrace. The hotel was planned to open in the spring of 2025, but it is clear that this schedule has changed.
Atli Kristjánsson, the project’s managing director, said on the occasion that the project had begun in 2018 with the demolition of older buildings.
However, the pandemic had caused the project to be put on hold. In parallel with the construction of the hotel, 27 apartments would be built next to it, at Skúlagata 26, but they would be for the general market and should go on sale at the end of 2024 or at the beginning of this year. Sales have not started. Atli could not be reached at the time of writing.
